It has been a difficult Winter for Phones Chess Club as we sadly lost two of our long-standing and stalwart members, Derek Ferris and Allan Brown.
Both played in the club for well over 30 years and tended to the everyday health and growth of the club – running the website, several teams, coaching, competitions, administration, welcoming old and new players: year in and year out. As well as giving of their humour and insight and – yes!- playing a fair amount of chess.
We are, in many ways, only able to pursue our current junior initiative because of all the effort and care put into the club’s running by Derek and Allan over the years. Similarly, we have several teams playing in the Glasgow area, but this has taken time and hard work to build up and make sustainable. The AD Brown competition has kept our club growing while others have struggled, and our healthy finances and happy new home at St Andrew Bridge Club was thanks to the input of both Derek and Allan.
They are both much missed and will be much remembered. The club would like to send its sincere condolences to their families and loved ones.
